Welcome new members! We are certainly growing quickly and hope to have more equipment to accommodate everyone in the next few weeks. Also, we are looking to expand our practice days to twice a week starting Winter term and hopefully move into the small gym as well. Pictures from practice on the 10th are now included in the 2008-2009 season gallery. Check em out!

Thank you to our members who attended the meeting with Jenny Welnick. We have a new club advisor now, Samantha (Sami) Faile, who will be dropping by one of our practices soon to meet everyone and give fencing a try. We are also looking to take club photos during one of our coming practices (most likely Nov 7th), I'll post more information about the pictures when it becomes available. Tournaments have also been updated - so check out the tournaments page or visit askFRED.net for more info.

Well, the night at the Stott center and the Party in the Park were a huge success! Thank you to everyone who was able to stop by and lend a hand. I think tonight's practice is going to be a big one! Welcome to all the new fencers who are just starting this term - it is great to have you here!

Our meeting with Jenny Welnick (our advisor) is scheduled for 4:00pm on Thursday Oct 9th at the rec clubs office (in the basement of smith). We MUST have at least 3 members present, but the more the merrier. This is required for us to re-register as a club. Please let Marina know if you can make it. Also, T-shirts are available if you ordered one and haven't yet picked it up. Just bring your $10 to any of the practices - and $10 for dues also!

There are some great foil tournaments coming up that are geared toward brand new fencers. They can be found on AskFRED.net and are called the "Senior Memorial Circuit". It is a 4 tournament circuit (you don't have to go to all 4 though) held in memory of beloved fencer and coach Sam P. Senior who passed away this summer at the age of 79. He was a member of the PSU Fencing Team back in the 60's and even won the collegiate foil championships! Talk to Marina for more information about the Senior Circuit tournaments - you might even win a real sword!

PSU Fencing team sweatshirts are now available to order in the merchandise section for $65. Club patches will also soon be available as well.

Attention all club members! We need to meet with Jenny Welnick, our advisor, before the fall term starts. At least 3 members MUST attend. Please email Marina if you would like to attend the meeting and she will schedule a date that works for everyone. Also, September 25th at 4:00pm all students are invited to sign the final beam installed in the new student rec center. It is located on SW 6th and Montgomery in the PSU Urban Plaza.

Congratulations to Andrew and Marina who both competed in a foil tournament in Tacoma Washington. Pictures from the event can be found in the new photo gallery.

UPDATES! I hope everyone is having a nice break. Just wanted to remind you all that practices are on hold until Friday October 3rd. In the meantime feel free to check out some other local clubs.

This year I would like to encourage all of you to try to attend some fencing tournaments outside of PSU. Northwest Fencing Center will be hosting a collection of tournaments geared toward new fencers and people who have never fenced tournaments before. They will likely be on Thursday nights at 7:00, cost about $10 and medals/prizes go to the top 4. Go to askFRED.net to create a profile (PSUFC can be listed as a primary club) and check out/sign up for tournaments online. If you need to borrow any equipment to use at a tournament PSU can supply you with gear on a first-come first-serve basis. I highly suggest trying to make it to Tacoma for MTFC's D and under foil on September 5th.

In other news, not only did the US sweep the women's individual saber event in Beijing, we also earned the bronze in the women's team saber, the silver in women's team foil and the silver in men's team saber. Congrats to all our athletes!

Mariel, Sada and Becca Mariel victory

Congratulations Mariel, Sada and Becca! All three women's saber fencers swept the medals in the individual saber event last night in Beijing. Tonight at 8:00pm Portland native Seth Kelsey will be competing for a chance at the gold in men's individual epee. His results, along with streaming video of the entire competition can be found online at nbcolympics.com.

Also, tonight check out channel 2 news around 5:00 to see a feature story on Northwest Fencing Center. Marina is in the background of some of the shots (wearing black sweats and a blue tank-top). You'll also get to see a great bout between Ariel Desmet (10th in the nation for men's foil) and another good fencer from the advanced foil camp.

Good news! Our electric equipment has arrived at last!!! Practice tonight will be the first time in the history of the PSU Fencing Club that we will be able to practice electrically. Please bring your own equipment if you have it, but we will be supplying lames, electric foils and body cords. Thanks a lot to Todd for supplying our electric Firefly box. Also, the opening ceremony for the Olympics will be tonight on channel 8 at 7:30pm. Women's saber will be at some point after 2:00am tomorrow (the 9th) on MSNBC.

Practice will be regularly held every Friday during the summer starting tomorrow (the 11th). Also, Northwest Fencing Center will be holding a fencing demonstration at this year's Bastille Day Festival in the Pearl. It is from 11:00am until 6:00pm on Saturday the 12th of July. All PSU Fencing Club students are welcome (and encouraged!) to attend. NWFC's coaches will be giving lessons to any and all who are interested and we can definitely help draw interest in our club. If you are interested in attending or would like to help Marina promote our club, please contact her at mldelucco@gmail.com or talk to her tomorrow at our club meeting. Hope to see you there!
